America imposed economic sanctions against India and Pakistan. Vajpayee
requested Indian Diaspora for help and millions of Indians responded. Close
to a billion dollar a month was sent by overseas Indians to ease the
pressure on essential imports. In other words the NRI’s breached the
sanctions and taught a lesson to the Americans. Vajpayee showed his
appreciation by creating the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’. This initiative
stayed dormant during Manmohan Singh’s government because ‘Madam’ does not
like overseas Indians. Indira Congress want their money but not their
advise. Indira Gandhi had profound hatred towards all NRI’s as they were
the only ones who dared criticize her and she could not punish them. Nehru
has similar frosty relations with the ‘Indian Diaspora’.
